IWC introduced nearly 2 dozen new watches in the Portugieser collection. Some vibrant colours for primary models and new wave of complications, too.
IWC Portugieser Automatic 42.3mm: Stainless steel case, burgundy dial, rhodium-plated hands and appliques, black alligator leather strap. There’s enough space inside to power up the watch for seven days by the IWC manufactured 52010 calibre.
It features the IWC specific Pellaton winding system using components of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. That charging motion can be admired from the back of the watch. It is quite a sight, that decorated movement. It’s a boutique edition
Functions: Hours, Minutes, Power reserve display – date display – small hacking seconds
IWC Portugieser Automatic 40mm: Ref. IW358306. A serene white dial with classy yellow gold bezel. 18-carat 5N gold case, silver-plated dial, gold-plated hands, 18-carat gold appliques, brown alligator leather strap by Santoni. Runs on IWC 82200 movement with a power reserve of just 60 hours.
Functions: Hours, Minutes, small seconds at 6
IWC Portugieser Chronograph 2020. The simpler collection from IWC 2020 watches includes a vibrant palette of chronographs. Two recessed totalisers at 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock, appliquéd Arabic numerals and slim hands in handsome dashing dial colours bottle green, burgundy and dark blue encompassed in 41 mm cases of steel and gold.
IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph 2020: Ref. IW390702:
Featuring a 44 mm case this nautical sports chronograph can resist water to 6 bar. Ticking away are wisely placed – stopped hours and minutes in a single totaliser – at 12 o’clock. It’s a flyback chronograph watch, which means the stopwatch hands can be returned to zero simply by pressing the reset button, and a new timing sequence starts immediately. The automatic winding builds up a power reserve of 68 hours. Let the next quarantine be on a Yacht.
This 2020 IWC watch sports a stainless steel and gold case, silver-plated dial, blue hands and appliques, stainless steel and gold bracelet
Functions: Stopwatch function with hours, minutes and seconds. hour and minute counters combined in a totaliser at 12 o’clock (flyback function), date display, small hacking seconds, screw-in crown.
Delighted to see this very interesting complication on an IWC watch. The Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide (Ref. 344001) is the first watch from IWC to sport the newly developed tide indication. A subdial at 6 o’clock indicates the expected times for the next high and low tide. The double moon phase display at 12 o’clock has been enhanced to show spring and neap tides and thus provides information about the strength of the current tides. Spring tides, which bring particularly high water, occur at full moon and new moon. 44 mm diameter of eye candy on the sea.
Another highlight of the IWC Portugieser 2020 watch collection is the IWC Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph (Ref. IW394006 in Platinum) combines a flying minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock with a retrograde date display at 9 o’clock and a flyback chronograph. The model is available in two versions, both limited to 50 watches. One is housed in an 18-carat Gold case with a blue dial and the other as shown in the image is in Platinum and silver plated dial.
I somehow like the position of the tourbillon, untradionatinally as it might be, at 12.
Functions: Mechanical chronograph movement – flying hacking minute tourbillon at 6 o‘clock – retrograde date display – stopwatch function with hours, minutes and seconds – hour and minute counter combined in a totaliser at 12 o‘clock – flyback function – 18-carat gold oscillating weight – limited to 50 watches.
The Tourbillon IWC collection also offers a limited edition 2020 watch collection with Perpetual calendar. Quite neatly placed sub dials. The IWC-manufactured 51950 calibre combines a perpetual calendar with a tourbillon that has 82 individual parts and weighs only 0.635 grams. To make it visible at 12 o’clock, the calendar module’s advance ring was opened, and the moon phase integrated into the month display at 6 o’clock. With its 18-carat gold rotor, the automatic winding system builds up a large, seven-day power reserve. The perpetual calendar’s mechanical programme automatically recognises the different lengths of the months and adds an extra day at the end of February every four years. The moon phase display is so precise that it will need adjusting by one day after 577.5 years.
