One of the most important and anticipated revelations at Baselworld, every year, is the Rolex collection. It is at this event, alone, that Rolex releases the first glimpse, of its new watches, for the year. For me, it is imperative to dedicate a blog to nearly every, new Rolex watch launched at Basel considering Rolex is among the most popular luxury watch brands in India (and elsewhere). Among the jewellery watches from Rolex, I, personally admire the Rolex Datejust range made in dial sizes as small as 29 mm, with gem setting method and patterns used with artistic virtuosity.
Rolex added a new style of Rolex oyster Datejust watch at Baselworld 2014. The Oyster Perpetual Datejust Pearlmaster 34 has a diamond carpet dial, surrounded in coloured-gem bezel. While there won’t be a shortage of buyers for this shimmer loaded Rolex Datejust, Rolex Datejust 2014 didn’t impress me as much as the Datejust models launched in 2013.
The 34 mm dials are made in three metal options yellow, white and everose (pink) gold. Rolex has its own foundry where it creates its own gold alloys from the purest raw materials. Dial base for all, is covered in 455 diamonds. Colour of gems on the bezel vary according to colour of base metal. 18Ct gold models have baguette cut pink sapphires and baguette-cut blue sapphires on the 18 ct white gold version. As simple as this design seems, it actually demands precision to get the stone shades, right. It isn’t easy to find sapphires of exactly the same shade for the entire bezel! You will notice in the pics below, how every third sapphire on a bezel, is a shade darker. There are 12 baguette-cut pink sapphires and 24 baguette-cut light-pink sapphires.
