What’s Under the Hood? Roger Dubuis SIHH 2018

Ever wondered what a see through hood on a Lamborghini would look like? Carved art-work done all over the engine and a coloured glass instead of the metal hood? Sigh! How blissful that would be! Until that happens, let us suffice our fancy with the Roger Dubuis Aventador S. Like a coveted limited edition Lambo, this one comes in just 88 pieces and is powered with raging mechanics.

The Roger Dubuis blue watch Aventador S comes in 88. Its sibling drenched in subtle Pink gold will be made in just 28 pieces. Both watches will have the basic functions of Hours and Minutes with jumping second and a power reserve indicator. Both Aventador S watches are water resistant to 50 m.

Both are propelled by the specially developed double balance wheel movement which Roger Dubuis calls Duotor (double balance wheels). The watch machine with two balance wheels produces higher frequency, allowing more resistance to gravity effects and therefore a higher precision. The movement is a totally revamped 312-part RD103SQ movement. This calibre is notably distinguished by engine strut bars revisiting the iconic Roger Dubuis Astral Skeleton principle, One might notice a clear contrast with the rest of the movement, as if the engine ‘hood’ were transparent.

Excalibur Aventador S Blue is crafted from the same C-SMC carbon as that used on the actual Lamborghini cars. The dial is one that will stand out in the crowd despite it being a skeleton like many other swiss watches thanks to the engine strut bars. What makes the blue Roger dubuis watch a winner among its peers is the a black and neptune blue bi-material strap, blue rubber over-moulding on the case and crown. There just isn’t anything better to replace that original strap with! The pink gold sibling wraps around the wrist in a black Alcantara strap.

Another stunner from Roger Dubuis is the Excalibur Spider Pirelli that will be machined in sleek black titanium with a choice of deep blue or white accents. The caliber powering this skeleton watch is 820SQ by Roger Dubuis. The fluted titanium black DLC skeletonised bezel is complemented by a crown over- moulded with white or blue rubber and matching white or blue stitching on the strap. Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirelli strap itself features rubber inlays from certified Pirelli winning tyres having competed in real races. So the real Pirelli-ness is in the straps and not the watch dial so much. Roger Dubuis Pirelli watch tells hours and minutes but not seconds.
